DescriptionProof Led in 1818, and also in 1830, 1831, in Process of Division of Commonty of the Hill of Wick
Administrative HistoryA proof is the Scottish equivalent of a trial in England and Wales, the hearing on evidence is a civil matter. A proof is heard and determined by a judge, rather than a jury trial. This proof was regarding the division of Commonty (right of ownership in land held in common by two or more people, and under certain servitudes) of the Hill of Wick. In 1818, Sir Benjamin Dunbar of Hempriggs, went against the Feuars of Wick over the use of land which he claimed belonged to his family for generations. He claimed that several feuars had been using parts of his land
