Administrative HistoryIn 1803 the British Fisheries Society purchased land south of Wick as part of a plan to improve the fishing industry in the Highlands. They built a harbour and model fishing village named Pulteneytown, designed by civil engineer Thomas Telford. By the second half of the 19th century, Wick had become the busiest herring port in Europe.
