Administrative History | Malcolm and Elizabeth Cameron bought the 30 acre croft at Laidhay, just north of Dunbeath in the late 1960s. Having sold the croft building to local hotelier Bert Mowat, Elizabeth proceeded to work with the trust Bert set up to restore the building. When the eighteenth century longhouse officially opened as a museum in 1974 it was with Elizabeth as curator. Elizabeth ensured that it was laid out as a ‘living museum’ with artefacts set out as they would have been had the original inhabitants still lived there. A natural host and tour guide, and with a passion for local history Elizabeth welcomed many visitors over the years. Elizabeth and her husband Malcolm ensured the outside was well kept with Malcolm cutting the grass and Elizabeth tending the garden. |
