Administrative History | The Viking Society for Northern Research was founded in 1892 as The Orkney, Shetland and Northern Society or Viking Club to promote interest in the Scandinavian North, its literature and antiquities. Meetings were usually held in London where members met to attend lectures and to read and discuss papers on northern subjects. It has its own library, based at University College London; publishes articles, texts, translations and original materials; and awards annual prizes to students or recent graduates who distinguish themselves in the study of the North. The 'Old-Lore' series of articles and texts was published between 1906 and 1946 and the 'Saga-Book' has been published regularly since 1895. |
