Administrative History | 1st Caithness Rifle Volunteers, Thurso, was officially formed in January 1860, followed by the 2nd Caithness Rifle Volunteers, Wick, in November 1860 and the 3rd Caithness Rifle Volunteers, Halkirk, in December 1860. The 4th Caithness Rifle Volunteers, Watten, were formed in March 1867. In 1880 the Caithness companies ceased to exist as seprate corps and became united companies of a new consolidated battalion entitled the 1st Sutherland (The Sutherland Highland) Rifle Volunteer Corps with 10 (later 12) companies, as follows: A Company - Golspie B Company - Dornoch C Company - Brora D Company - Rogart E Company - Bonar Bridge F Company - Lerwick G Company - Thurso H Company - Wick I Company - Halkirk K Company - Watten |
