Administrative HistoryDonald Bremner Ryrie of Keiss, Caithness, was the first radio officer on a whale factory ship called the 'Southern Express'. The Southern Express was built in 1914 by William Doxford and Sons Ltd, Sutherland and was attacked and sunk by a U-boat on 14th October 1942. The ship was originally built as a steam tanker but was converted in 1928. Donald Bremner Ryrie died in the attack along with forty seven others; seventy seven survived.
