Administrative HistoryThe Queen Mother was born Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon on 4the Aug 1900. In 1923 she married the then Duke of York, who became King George VI on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936. King George VI died in 1952. The Queen Mother purchased Barrogill Castle, which she renamed The Castle of Mey, later that same year for use as a summer residence. A regular visitor to Caithness, the Queen Mother carried out numerous public and private engagements in the county; she was presented with the Freedom of Wick in 1956 and the Freedom of the District of Caithness in 1990. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother died, aged 101, in March 2002.
