TitlePrinted volume, "The Prophecies of the Brahan Seer (Coinneach Odhar Fiosaiche)" by Alexander Mackenzie, introductory chapter by Andrew Lang, published by Eneas Mackay, Stirling
Date1953
Administrative HistoryAlso known as "The Scottish Nostradamus", Kenneth Mackenzie was supposed to have lived in the 17th century, and was supposed to have worked as a labourer on Brahan Castle near Dingwall where he met his death. There’s no documentation of a Coinneach Odhar ever having existed in the Highlands during the 17th century. But there is in the 16th century. Parliamentary records from 1577 show that two writs were issued for the arrest of the “principal enchanter” Coinneach Odhar. Aside from oral tradition, these writs are the only evidence that a man called Coinneach Odhar actually existed, though some people believe that the Seer was in fact the grandson of the 16th century enchanter.
Given the lack of supporting evidence, and the dubious nature of some of his prophecies, it has also been alleged that he was the creation of the folklorist, Alexander Mackenzie, author of this book.
