Administrative HistoryGrantown-on-Spey was erected a burgh of regality on 28 February 1694, with a planned village being founded by James Grant in 1766. Grantown-on-Spey became a Police Burgh in 1898. The Town Council was abolished in 1975 under the terms of the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973 (c. 65). The burgh, formerly in Moray, subsequently became part of Highland Region, with its powers being assumed by Highland Regional Council and Badenoch and Strathspey District Council.
