Administrative History | The burgh of Inverness was established as a royal burgh probably during the reign of David I (1124-1153). The status of Inverness as a royal burgh was later confirmed by William the Lion (1165-1214). The industries of the burgh were shipbuilding, agriculture and fishing. By 1841 the population of Inverness was 9,100 and by 1961, 33,096. Inverness Town Council was abolished in 1975 under the terms of the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973 (c. 65). Its powers were assumed by Highland Regional Council and Inverness District Council. |
