Administrative History | The MacDonald family represented in this collection originated in Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire. Those members recorded here are: Thomas MacDonald, who went to Australia some time before 1879 Thomas's brother, Alexander MacDonald, who became a painter and sign writer in Glasgow Alexander's wife Rachel MacDonald, nee Hogg, niece of poet and novelist James Hogg, the 'Ettrick Shepherd' Alexander and Rachel's four children: Hugh MacDonald, grandfather of the donor James Macdonald, doctor, who studied at Glasgow University and in Germany and was given a title by the Italian government for his medical work, which he gave up when Italy joined German side during the First World War.
