Administrative HistoryThe name Sinclair is of Norman origin from "Saint-Clair-sur-Elle" and was established in Scotland in 1162. By right of marriage, the Earldoms of Orkney and Caithness were secured by the Sinclairs in the 14th century. In 1455, William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, became Earl of Caithness.
