TitleHighland Railways and the World Wars
Datec.1943-1944
DescriptionReports by unknown author/s, c.1943-1944
Administrative HistoryBoth WWI and WWII impacted upon the normal operations of the Highland railways. The LMS, London Midland and Scottish Railway, ran trains the length and breadth of Britain. During WWII the annual number of passengers carried by its Highland trains grew from 452,000 in 1938 to 1.1 million in 1942. The huge influx of army, navy and air force personnel to the north of Scotland as part of the war effort accounts for the dramatic rise. Railway infrastucture expanded to meet the extra demand being put upon it as normal life in the Highlands was, as in the rest of Great Britain, suspended for the duration.
