Administrative HistoryThe earlier records concern the affairs of Alexander Fraser (1746-1818), sometime schoolmaster at Raining's School and merchant, and his brother William. By far the larger part of the archive derives from the affairs of Alexander's son John (1795-1852). John took over the business when his father died, apparently put it on a more business-like footing as Alexander Fraser & Co. and consolidated its interests. He also operated the Inverness agency for the Perth Banking Company from 1818 to 1826. Fraser, a devout Presbyterian (and later member of the Free Church) was also deeply involved in local church affairs; he played a leading role in several charities and was Provost of Inverness 1834-1836. These commitments are documented in this archive to varying degrees. John Fraser migrated to Canada in 1837 and died there in 1852 from injuries sustained in an accident. It is not known whether he transferred his business interests to a member of his family or to friends or associates, although the records cease quite abruptly in 1836. More detailed information about John Fraser is documented in the relevant voucher file at Highland Council Archives.
This extraordinarily detailed archive provides abundant information about many facets of the history of Inverness and district, and to a lesser extent about certain further parts of the Highlands between the late 18th century and 1835.
