Administrative History | Reverend Donald Sage (1789-1869) was an important figure in Highland history serving as a Church of Scotland and later Free Church minister in the parish of Resolis. His father Reverend Alexander Sage (1753-1824) was minister of Kildonan Parish and his father Aeneas Sage (1693-1774), was a preacher in the parishes of Lochcarron, Applecross and Gairloch. Donald Sage married Elizabeth Mackintosh (1807-1899), the daughter of Reverend William Mackintosh (d.1830), minister of Thurso and Christina Sutherland (b.1775) the daughter of Reverend William Sutherland (1737-1816), minister of Wick. Reverend William Sutherland's son James Sutherland (1790-1840) had an important political career in India becoming political commissioner for the district of Guzerat. Donald and Elizabeth Sage's youngest daughter Christina Camilla Jane Sage (1846-1923) married the Reverend Donald Sutherland minister of Kilmonivaig (1826-1913). Their second son Reverend William Sinclair Sutherland (1877-1945) went to India as a missionary and became director of the Lady Willingdon Leprosy Settlement at Chingleput. He married Elsie Ruth Nicol (1878-1950) one of the first Women Graduates of Melbourne University in 1901, who ran the Red Cross in India during WWII. Their son Dr William Ronald Nicol Sutherland, also known as Ronald Sutherland (1914-1994), studied at Edinburgh University. He was a GP in Thurso before retiring to Inverness in the 1970s. Whilst in Edinburgh he met Iris Key from Paisley whom he later married. |
