| Administrative History | The first Probus Club was established in 1965 with the support of the Rotary Club. The aim was to provide a place for likeminded retired professional and businessmen to meet. The success of the first Probus Club meant that Rotary Clubs up and down the country were encouraged to promote the establishment of such organisations. Probus Clubs were initially established from men but in recent years there has been a rise in the numbers of ladies and mixed groups. Members meet informally for social events and to hear talks from local speakers on a variety of different topics. Generally speaking politics and religion are banned as topics for discussion but members of political and religious organisations are welcome to speak on other subjects. There are no strict rule governing the running of Probus Clubs and those in Great Britain and Ireland do not have a governing body making each club autonomous.
The Inverness & District Probus Club was inaugurated on 4th October 1988 and usually meets on the first Tuesday of every month. The Club is managed by a Committee consisting of a president, vice-president, honorary secretary and a honorary treasurer alongside three ordinary members. |
