Administrative HistoryJoseph M. Hanzlik enlisted in the US Navy in June 1917 and was to USS 'Swallow', a mine sweeper assigned to support the laying of the Northern Mine Barrage, particularly Base 18, Inverness. During his time in Inverness, Joseph met and married Jane (Jennie) Russell, daughter of James and Helen Russell of Muirton Street. Jane remained in Inverness until Joseph's discharge in August 1920 she joined him in America, one of Inverness' three "WW1GI Brides".

During his time in the US Navy, Joseph amassed a large collection of postcards from the places the ship visited along with photographs of 'Swallow' and her crew. These have been kept and conserved by his grandson Joseph F Hanzlik III.
