Administrative HistoryThe Nairnshire Branch of the British Red Cross Society purchased “The Beeches” in 1958 to act as its new County Headquarters; the building went under extensive repair and alterations and was used by the Red Cross from 1958 until at least 1981.
When the building was purchased the Scottish Branch took out a long term loan of £2200 to help with any repair work on the building, any work that exceeded this amount would have to be repaid as a short term loan over five years. In 1979 the building required a compressive rewire, this exceeded the £2200 loan and the County Branch could not repay the five year loan. The County Branch decided to have ownership of the building transferred to the Nairnshire Branch. The Scottish Branch agreed to do this provided the building was sold within 10 years of the transfer. This did happen and 50% of the profit went back to the Scottish branch after the transfer was completed on 22 Oct 1980. Today the Nairnshire branch operates a shop in Nairn High Street and “The Beeches” is advertised as a holiday home.
