Administrative History | Responsibility for aviation in the U.K. was initially held by the Ministry of Transport until the establishment of the Civil Aviation Authority by the government in 1972, to regulate all aspect of aviation in the U.K. A subsidiary company, Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd. was formed in 1986 to manage 10 airports throughout the Highlands and Islands of Scotland: Barra, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree and Wick. Ownership of the company was transferred to the Secretary of State for Scotland (now the Scottish Ministers) on 1 April 1995. The company receives subsidies from the Secretary of State for Scotland in accordance with the Civil Aviation Act 1982. |
