Administrative History | The Mackintoshes of Balnespick are an offshoot of the Mackintoshes of Strone and Gask, who are in turn a branch of the main Mackintosh of Mackintosh line, descended from Donald Glas, natural son of William, the 13th Mackintosh Chief. Lachlan Mackintosh of Strone and Gask (d.c.1644) , grandson of Donald Glas, acquired the Balnespick lands in 1606 (see D351/1/1 below), and they passed, with his other lands, to his heir William (d.c.1645-1648), who in turn passed them on to his third son Lachlan Mackintosh, from whom the Mackintoshes mentioned in this collection descend. The members of the family chiefly covered by this collection are William Mackintosh of Balnespick (d.1784); his sons Captain Lachlan Mackintosh of Balnespick (d.1785) and Lieutenant Colonel William Mackintosh (d.1814), and Captain Lachlan's son William Mackintosh of Balnespick (d.1817), and daughters Jessy and Margaret Mackintosh. |
