Administrative History | Alexander Finlay Mackenzie was born on 1 March 1865. He was apprenticed to William Mackintosh of Inverness on 1 September 1879. Upon completion of his apprenticeship in 1884 Mackenzie gained a temporary appointment with William Laidlaw Carruthers before moving to Dingwall to work for William Cumming Joass. On 28 April 1889, Mackenzie began his own commercial practice in Inverness. In 1915 he was appointed Inverness Town Architect and Burgh Surveyor and designed individual houses, housing schemes and public buildings in this capacity. Mackenzie died on 6 September 1954 and was survived by his wife, Margaret Jane Munro and at least one daughter.
