Administrative HistoryThe Aldourie and Balnain estates passed to the Tytler family through the marriage of Anne Fraser (1753-1837) to Alexander Tytler (1747-1813) in 1776; Alexander added the name of Fraser to his own, so that he and his descendants were thereafter known as Fraser-Tytler. Alexander and his brother James Tytler were the sons of William Tytler of Woodhouselee (1711-1792), lawyer and historian, and his wife Ann Craig, and Alexander was himself a historian, professor at Edinburgh University, biographer and judge under the title of Lord Woodhouselee.

Alexander and Anne had three daughters-Jane, Anne and Isabella-and four sons: James Tytler W.S., Alexander Fraser Tytler, the historian Patrick Fraser Tytler (1791-1849), and William Fraser Tytler (1777-1853), who was appointed Sheriff Depute of Inverness in 1810. He married Margaret Grant of Burdsyards (1801-1861) and they had numerous children, among whom:
Jane Fraser Tytler, (1804-1838), who married Patrick (later Sir Patrick) Grant (1804-1895);
Elizabeth Fraser Tytler (1802-1890)
Charles Edward Fraser Tytler (1817-1881), for whom see below;
Alexander Fraser Tytler (1803-1832)
George Fraser Tytler (1807-1836)
James Bannatyne Macleod Fraser Tytler (1821-1914)
William Fraser Tytler (1815-1878)
Christina Fraser Tytler, who married Arthur Ruxton
Emily Fraser Tytler, who married Richard Torin
Sheriff William Fraser Tytler's eldest son Charles Edward was married twice: firstly to Etheldreda St Barbe (1818-1851), with whom he had three children, including Mary Fraser Tytler, who married G. F. Watts; and secondly Harriet Jane Prettyman, with whom he had two sons, Charles, who died very young, and Edward Grant Fraser Tytler (1856-). He married Edith Selwyn and had two children relevant to this collection, a son Neil Fraser Tytler (1889-1937) who married Christian Shairp, and a daughter Hester Vere Fraser Tytler (1886-1949) who married Allan Cameron (d. 1914)
