TitleGaelic Society of Inverness: JLM Mitchell archive
Date1678 - 2002
Administrative HistoryIt is not clear how or where Mitchell acquired the papers, though it seems likely that those relating to his ancestors (D928/C), and including some photographs, were found among the possessions of Anne Matheson, his great grandmother. Of equal significance are the papers relating to Soirle Macdonald, concerning his sojourn in North Carolina in the latter half of the 18th century and his years back home on the Isle of Skye during the early 19th century. The papers could best be described as fragmentary (as is the whole accession) but of some historical interest, especially for the brief references to enslaved people..
Other documents relate mainly to a Major William Picton apparently from Forres, and to Louis Neckar, a native of Switzerland and resident on Skye during the 19th century
