ActivityHetty Munro was born in Thurso, Caithness, in 1912, the daughter of the owner of the wood yard at Bridgend. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) in 1938 and early in the war was stationed at Stromness in Orkney as a secretary at the army headquarters. In 1941 she spent some time at Staff College in the New Forest then was then stationed at South East Command under General Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) followed by posts in Edinburgh, Shrewsbury and Newmarket. Towards the end of the war Munro worked in rehabilitation training. In 1946 she took a job in John Lewis in London but later returned to Thurso where she opened an antique shop. She was an active member of the local community and had many interests, including researching and writing articles on Caithness and its history. She was also a member of Caithness Field Club. Munro died in 1989.
