| Description | The Baillie archive includes papers of several members of the family, mainly:
- William Baillie (1737-1782), a career Army officer who died in India;
- his brother John (d1797), also an Army officer who died while on service in Ireland;
- John's wife Isabella (d1832);
- John and Isabella's children: Alick (died c1805), Archibald (died 1817), Katherine (died c1819), Anne (died early 1860s) and William (14th laird and last of the line, 1789-1869).
Isabella assumed responsibility for the estate after John Baillie's death, duties which fell to Anne (who never married) after her mother's death, since her brother William was incapable of managing his own affairs. Isabella and Anne corresponded widely, and their letters to professional people, family and friends, form a substantial part of the archive. |
| Administrative History | Dunain was an estate in Inverness-shire, south west of Inverness. Alexander Baillie, son of Sir William Baillie of Lamington in Lanark, appears to have moved north to support the Earl of Huntly against the Earl of Crawford and was granted lands at Dunain and Torbreck and made constable of the Castle of Inverness under Huntly in 1452 as a reward for bravery in the Battle of Brechin. Alexander married a daughter of the Laird of Grant and from them are descended the families of Baillies of Dochfour, of Dunain and of Leys. John Baillie (d.1797) of Dunain was an army officer and died whilst on service in Ireland in 1797. He married Isabella (d.1832) and their children were; Alick (d.c.1805); Archibald (d.1817); Katherine (d c.1819); Anne (d.1860's) and William (1789-1869), 14th Laird of Dunain and the last of the line. |
